Usually, home health is needed after a hospital, rehab unit, or nursing facility stay for an illness or accident. In other cases, a doctor or family member may refer a patient living at home who needs help to continue to live independently.
Most people are covered under their health insurance policy, Medicare, or Medicaid benefits. Medicare has excellent home health coverage, with minimal or no fees due from the patient. Private insurance policies typically have coverage for all ages from infants to seniors.
All hospital discharge planners or social workers will provide you with recommendations or a list of agencies in your area. You may also ask your doctor, nurse or other medical referral sources for information.
